Painting Zone & Art of Drawing General Course Information

What is watercolour painting?

The art of painting realistic objects in space, using layers of transparent coloured washes. Lines are made using pencil, brush or pen. Watercolours have uniquely characteristic appearance which comes from the use of textured white paper, and from leaving areas unpainted to create the illusion of light.

  • Daytime watercolour painting classes are held every Wed at OSO Arts Centre, Barnes Green, SW13 0LF, between 11.30am-1.30pm
  • Evening watercolour painting classes are every Wed at The Bulls Head, Lonsdale Road, Barnes, SW19 9PY, between 7.30-9.30pm
  • Daytime watercolour painting classes are held every Fri at Canbury Pavilion, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 5AW, between 1.30-3.30pm
  • Watercolour Dayschools take place at The Bulls Head each half-term, on Wednesdays
  • Drawing Dayschools are held regularly on Sundays at Redlees Gallery, Isleworth, TW7 6DW
  • Tailored tutorials are available in West London and Bristol. Please visit the  one-to-ones page.
  • All courses are suitable for all levels, but basic drawing skills will enable you to progress more quickly
  • Subjects include still life, landscapes and people
  • In drawing classes, you'll learn observational drawing skills including use of line, light & shadow, proportion and perspective. Media includes pencil, charcoal, pastels and pen
  • In watercolour classes you'll cover using drafting skills to support your watercolour, and painting skills including colour theory, washes, resist, line & wash and textural effects
  • Learning is through structured exercises and technique demos and examples. Tuition available is  via one-to-one and group support
  • Classes are limited to twelve participants
  • Some venues have annual exhibitions, and displaying your art is encouraged. Please feel free to request details.
